Brian Anderson is Awesome

Brian Anderson came out publicly.

This guy is a legend, and although it was more than a little sad to hear how hard being in skate culture was for him at times I'm pumped that he is out now and living his best life.

Brian Anderson should be your favorite skater, even if you don't like skateboarding. The guy is rad. And not for nothing: he's fucking awesome at skateboarding.

Photos of Hundreds of Unemployed Youths Fall Aor a Fake Recruitment Advert in Lagos This Morning

Hundreds of unemployed Nigerian youths today fell for a fake recruitment advert sent out via Whatsapp.

A fake message was drafted and sent out by a prankster, claiming that people who have a B.sc and are interested in a 80k salary paying job at a call center in Guaranty Trust Bank plc, should come for an interview by 9am in VI, Lagos.

People thought it was true and hundreds of youths, even from outside Lagos, came formally dressed but were shocked to find out it was a hoax. See tweets explaining more on what happened and a video, after the cut.

Thugs beat up Osun indigenes in LAUTECH

We’ve no hands in it, says Ogbomoso Parapo

ARMED thugs yesterday allegedly invaded the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), in Ogbomoso, Oyo State and attacked some workers of Osun State origin.

They allegedly told the workers to leave the institution or lose their lives.

The thugs, according to an eye witness stormed the Bursar’s office, beat up the security guard on thir bid to attack the Bursar. But they were stopped by the Department of State Service (DSS) officials and policemen invited by the university.

The policemen escorted the Bursar out of the premises.

Another eyewitness explained that members of the Osun State House of Assembly Committee on Education visited the institution earlier to address their fellow indigenes following an  appeal for protection.

The witness said the lawmakers advised the workers to be calm   assuring them of the Osun government’s protection.

According to him, the lawmakers also advised them to stay away till the two owner-states resolve the crisis.

His words: “Shortly after the lawmakers left, a major leader of the Ogbomoso Parapo, a socio-cultural union of Ogbomoso indigenes, led a gang of hoodlums to the institution. They first beat up a member of staff whom they believed hails from Osun State because of his surname Osunbade, though he actually hails from Oyo State.

“From there, they stormed the Bursar’s office. On getting there, the security guard attached to the office prevented them from gaining entry but he was beaten to near pulp. On seeing what was going on outside, the Bursar, who is from Osun State, quickly locked his door from behind.

The hoodlums, went to the window to threaten him that they would burn down his office if he refused to open. But as they were planning on what next to do, the DSSS people came. Then, they fled. The security operatives escorted the bursar out of the premises.”

It was learnt that the bursar and the leaders of the thugs went to make statements at the police station.

The attack caused pandemonium in the institution; workersran heter-skelter to escape from the touts.

But Chairman of the institution’s Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Dr Biodun Olaniran, described the incident as minor. He said some thugs came to attack some ASUU members, adding that the case was reported to the registrar, who has taken appropriate steps.

The National President of the parapo group, Saka Bello, did not pick his calls nor did he reply the text message seeking  his reaction to the allegation.
But the National Secretary workers of the Ogbomoso Parapo, Michael Abioye, denied that the group sponsored the thugs. He said staff members of Oyo State origin planned a meeting for today, pointing out that news of the planned meeting caused apprehension in the university. He said no thugs invaded the premises.

Abioye said the   change of ownership could not be achieved through violence but by peaceful means
LAUTECH’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mr Lekan Fadeyi said he could not comment on the incident because he was not around.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Adekunle Ajisebutu, was also not available for comments.
Ogbomoso indigenes have been campaigning for Oyo State to become sole owner of the  university, which is jointly owned with Osun State. The Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Jimoh Oyewunmi, threw his wight behind the campaign in an advertorial last week.

They claim that Osun has not  been fulfilling its financial obligations to the university.

Some members of the Oyo State House of Assembly, mainly from Ogbomoso, also last week presented a motion seeking the removal of Osun State as a co-owner of the institution.

ENGLISH FOOTBALL CRISIS: Sam Allardyce Sacked, Gareth Southgate take Charge

Sam Allardyce has left his post as England manager after just 67 days in charge and one game, the Football Association have confirmed.

Gareth Southgate has been appointed as England manager on a temporary basis.
Sam Allardyce left his role as in charge of the Three Lions on Tuesday after following secretly filmed remarks regarding "how to get around transfer rules.

The former Sunderland and West Ham manager spent just 67 days in the role, winning his one game in charge as Slovakia were beaten 2-1 with an injury-time winner.

The England Under-21s coach will now oversee the remaining senior games of 2016 as a search for a new manager begins.

Story of Your Life (Not Actually Arrival)

I read Story of Your Life by Ted Chiang many years ago. According to the helpful receipt I saved to use as a bookmark I bought the book on 2 Sept 2002 at around 9 PM. Details are fun! What was I doing at a (now defunct) Borders bookstore at 9 PM on a Monday? No idea. Buying books, obvs.

The story is a masterpiece, and it stuck with me over the years. The premise is deeply affecting, and the story itself is very well written. I loved it so much that when I heard they made a movie I dug the book off the bookshelf and re-read it again after over a decade.

You should read it if you like words, and books, and reading. The movie trailer outlines a much different narrative than the one described in the book. Also the story will probably take you less time to read. Even though the movie is getting great reviews they should be considered separately. The payoff of the story will be a lot better if you haven't seen the movie. So buy it, and read it. Think of the rest of the anthology as an excellent bonus.

As an aside: made a rare appearance at the local bar last night and a girl approached me and asked me if I was watching the football game on the tv. I said, no, not really. She said, 'oh because this time of year all the guys I know are obsessed with football'. I said, that's not me. She said, 'what do you do?' I said, 'I read books.' She would have been less surprised if I said "I kick puppies."

You're Doing it Wrong: Trick or Treating

Originally published this on 2 Nov 2015, but since IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN (GET EXCITED FOR HALLOWEEN) I'm reposting it. You're welcome(?).

**************

I guess this is a real thing that happened. A parent posted these around their neighborhood in Philly or its environs.

Someone forwarded it to me so who knows? The internet is full of things that are not true. But it is funny and sparked a discussion amongst the peeps. I mean a discussion beyond the gross helicopter parenting and projected sadness on display in the flyer. (It is hard to decide which part is the most lame. Is the the 'don't exclude anyone part'? Or is the part where you should hand out candy that is gluten free, dairy free, and nut free? Lord have mercy on this poor kid because his parents are failing.)

What is the lamest halloween trick or treat you can put in someone's bag?

This list is a very strong summary of utter garbage. Let's rate them on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being a full size snicker's bar, and 1 being an apple or whatever.
  • Carrot sticks? Go f yourself. (Not Rated)
  • Smarties - Not good but they will do the job. 4 out of 10 wrappers in your pocket.
  • Necco wafers - have only seen these in movies about the apocalypse because they are the last thing left to eat. 1 out of 10 zombies.
  • Lifesavers - Could eat it if you were dying. 2 out of 10 red tongues.
  • Brach's Lemon Drops - My favorite, except that they ruin your mouth. 8 out of 10 cold sores.
  • Raisins - You are a troll. 0 out of 10 opportunities to be socially well adjusted.
There were some other options suggested by my friend Eames:
  • Pennies. This was definitely the worst thing I remembered. 0 out of 10 pieces of garbage you rescued from your ashtray, adjusted for inflation.
  • Homemade popcorn ball -  Depends on if it is caramel corn or not. If it is homemade caramel corn then that is actually good. 8 out of 10 pieces of popcorn stuck in your teef. If it is anything but caramel corn then it sucks. 1 out of 10 balls of sadness.
Hope you had a good halloween. Mine was quiet. I loathe dress up, if you hadn't heard.

Airtel Night Data Bundles Still Blazing - Get 500MB for N25, 1.5GB for N50

Airtel has chosen to follow the footsteps of MTN night packages by launched another Night plan which offers you 500MB for N25 and 1.5GB for N50.

To Activate The Offer
This plan is exclusively for SmartTRYBE users on Airtel alone, it means you must migrate to Airtel SmartTRYBE before you can enjoy the offer, dial *312#

I can say that this is slightly better than the MTN Night Plan of 500MB for just N25 , because with MTN night plan every SIM card entitled to a one-time activation per night, but this Airtel night plan can be renewed if exhausted, it means, you can resubscribe after exhausting the initial 1.5GB.

In essence, you can use 3GB for N100 in just one night. When, this is ok, but no amount of capped data can balance with the unlimited data plan, Airtel please bring back our unlimited night plan with the reasonable price. Biko

3. Send NIGHT to 131 via SMS and you’ll get a message like this “Dear customer, you have successfully subscribed to Free Night Browsing between 00:00 and 04:00. N25 has been deducted from your account.

Note:
Every SIM card entitled to a one time activation per night, but if you have more than one MTN sim, you can get as much as 2GB at the cheap price of N100 with 4 different MTN sim cards.

Remember that, this plan is usable only within 12am – 4am everyday.

Enjoy it while it last.

Jose Fernandez is Dead

Sad news out of Miami this morning as Jose Fernandez died in the early morning hours in a boating crash. Baseball is boring and lame - too much baloney about playing the game the 'right way' - but Jose Fernandez was neither of those things; he was the antithesis of boring and lame baseball. He was really good, and he was a joy to watch.

I'm reminded of something Shea Serrano wrote in a series he did on coaching middle school basketball (which I cannot recommend highly enough; read it here in its entirety). In describing one of his immensely talented, handsome, and charming players he said something like, "I don't know how it would feel to be a master of the universe, but it looks like a hell of a lot of fun." That's how I felt when I watched Jose Fernandez.

He was 24.

13 Ways To Make Friends In your 30's

Adult friendships are super important for your physical health as well. According to a 2016 review of research , friendships can extend your life span by 50 percent, according to a study published in PLoS Medicine .

That's twice as beneficial as working out regularly.

"It's hard to forge friendships outside of your established friend group. Add a busy work schedule to the already daunting task of making friends as an adult, and finding new friends can seem like an impossible task,".

But it is possible to make friends in your thirties — promise. Here's how to go about it.

1. Tap friends of friends. Network for friends the way you'd network for job. Remember how your BFF from college was always talking about her friend from camp who you didn't really care about, but now she lives in the same city as you so you care immensely? Ask your friend to hook you up on a friend date!

2. Compliment someone. Want a great ice breaker? People love to hear compliments, even from total strangers. "Compliments are my secret weapon to connecting with potential new friends!

When you give an authentic compliment, you let someone know they have something that you admire. And it can lead to follow up questions where you may discover that you have things in common,".

3. Be consistent. Try a class or join a group, but once you find that activity with like-minded people, go regularly. It's hard for a friendship to grow if there isn't a pattern of predictability.

4. Use an app. ""Everything else is digitalized — shopping, movies, dating — so why not make finding new friends just as easy?"

5. Get real real fast. Sometimes it's better to cut to the chase and just get personal really quick (the same way you would when dating). Getting a little intense during a Q&A can create friendly feelings between strangers in just 45 minutes.

Admit something personal in one of your first conversations with the PNF (potential new friend) — it will make them more comfortable and encourage them to open up.

6. Reconnect with old friends. New friends are great, but don't forget about old friends. Maybe you lost touch after you stopped working together or the friend you had in common moved away. That doesn't mean you can't pick the relationship back up, especially in this ever-connected world of social media.

7. Keep your expectations low. You may have had a magical moment with the woman in line at the bank and you may have even gotten her number, but do not expect to reach BFF status by the weekend. People are busy (as are you) and real friendship takes a little time to build.

8. Make the time. A friendship takes commitment and time. Though you might do a happy dance when someone cancels plans you didn't want to go to anyway, try not to do that when building a friendship. "Making new friends as an adult is a lot like dating. It takes investing time, energy, making a lot of plans, and asking questions and being vulnerable to build the foundation of a great, long-lasting friendship,".

9. Be patient. You aren't always going to be entertained as a new friend goes on for hours about their kid's pre-school application, but you're building the foundation of a friendship and they'll remember your attentiveness (hopefully) the next time you need to vent.

10. Do any thing together. Maybe friendships in your twenties were all about big nights out on the town or exotic vacations, but in your thirties, a friendship could revolve around more simple, casual activities like running to the drug store together or walking on the streets. Companionship is really all we need to benefit, and just showing up is a big part of friendship.

11. Be confident. Even if your Instagram feed isn't filled with #squad pics, be confident when you meet someone new. If you seem nervous, they'll be able to sense it — and that can put people off. Have fun! Let that energy draw people to you.

12. Get out more. Say yes to everything! Sure, your couch and Netflix may be calling your name, but you need to be social if you want to meet people, so go to that friend of a friend's art show or your neighbor's house warming.

Even if the host doesn't turn out to be your new best friend, there could be at least one person there who could have friendship potential.

13. Be open to new kinds of friends. The friends you made in your twenties were probably a lot like you, especially if you went to school together or met at work. But it's time to stop looking for people just like you. Embrace a friendship with the stay-at-home mom, but also with the high corporate executive. Become friends with your workout instructor! Diversify your friend group.

I hope you grab a point from here?
Thanks.

Four (4) Simple Ways To Make Money In Time of Recession

It's unfortunate that the Nigerian economy is in Recession. A lot of companies are shutting down, people are losing their jobs, and life is becoming difficult.

However, there's a bright side to this- You can still make a lot of money in this dark period. Here are four ways to make more money in a time of recession:

1. Use your skills/ talent: Recession is a time to use your talents to the fullest since there are no jobs. Even if you get a job, you may not get a good pay. This is where your talent comes in. If you are good at photography,Engineering designs and construction, cooking, sewing, writing, or anything at all, this is a time to make more money.

Ensure you give people value for their money. People will always need these services, and recession will hardly affect them.

2. Go into retail: Retails are good businesses for recession. Just ensure that your retail products are always in demand. Beverages, cosmetics, popcorn, packaged gari and household goods blossom during this time.

3. Go into agriculture: Agriculture is another way to make money because agricultural products are always in demand. It may not be easy, but you could start with a small poultry farm, a small fish pond, or a small garden. You'll be surprised with the turnover.

4. Become a tutor: If you are good at tutoring, this will be a good time to make extra cash. People have kids who are constantly in need of private tutors. If you're good at, you'll make a lot of money.

Think of doing something these days.... and if you want to be financially capable in this period just place a call at

Patience Jonathan's houseboy, driver arrested by EFCC

Abuja - The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed the arrest of a driver, houseboy and two other domestic staff members linked to Former First Lady Patience Jonathan.

According to a Naij report, the arrests follow from the freezing of Jonathan's accounts, which were found to be linked to a $20 million money laundering case with four companies owning accounts at Skye Bank, including one in Jonathan's name containing $5 million.

Although Jonathan claimed that she had transferred millions in funds to the former Special Adviser of Domestic Affairs, Waripamowei Dudafa, to open accounts for her, in was later found that Dudafa had opened the accounts in the names of domestic servants employed by him.

"When we detained the directors, we found out that they were Dudafa’s domestic servants. One of them was a houseboy while another one was a driver.

Their photographs were used in opening the accounts and their signatures were forged," an EFCC operatives revealed.
The servants have since been proven to be innocent and have been released from the custody of the anti-graft agency.

Patience Jonathan has since filed a lawsuit against Skye Bank, seeking freedom to use her accounts once again.

Buhari, Obama to meet in New York

Abuja - President Barack Obama and Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari will meet on Tuesday in New York, on the sidelines of the US leader’s final appearance at the UN General Assembly session.

The 71st UN General session opens on Monday. It will be President Buhari’s second appearance since he came to power on 29 May last year.

The meeting confirmed by White House was not on the itinerary of the Nigerian leader released on Friday.

Obama is also scheduled to meet with the presidents of Iraq and Colombia.

Obama will discuss with President Buhari about continued U.S. support for security and economic changes in the country, as well the government’s efforts to counter the terrorist group Boko Haram.

Nigeria and the US have pending agreement over the sale of US military equipment, especially attack helicopters to fight the insurgents.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Friday by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, President Buhari would deliver Nigeria’s statement at the opening of the General Debate of the Assembly on “The Sustainable Development Goals: A Universal Push to Transform Our World.”

Adesina revealed that the president would also attend a high-level summit to be hosted by the UN, on “Large Movements of Refugees and Migrants’’.

“The summit, which is the first of its kind organised by the General Assembly at the Heads of State and Government level, is expected to come up with a blueprint for a better international response to enhance protection of migrants and refugees.’’

He also said that Buhari would deliver a keynote address on “Taking Climate Action toward Sustainable Development in Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin.”

The president’s aide disclosed that leaders of member-countries of Lake Chad Basin would attend the summit, organised by Nigerian government, to highlight the urgent need to mobilise international response to the situation in the Chad Basin.

“Over nine million people are in need of humanitarian assistance in the Lake Chad Basin.”

LAUTECH’s lecturers To Begin Strike Next Week

#LAUTECH’s lecturers begin strike next week

Date: Sep 15 2016

rejects call to expel Osun Indigenes

LAUTECH''s entrance.
‎Following non-payment of five months salaries and 23-months subvention, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso (LAUTECH) Chapter have resolved to embark on strike next week.

In an interview with newsmen in Ibadan, the Chairman of ASUU, LAUTECH chapter, Dr Biodun Olaniran stated that the decision to proceed on strike was reached at the congress of the Union held on Thursday (yesterday).

According to Dr Olaniran, the academic staff had been attending to their students and engaged in supervision while enduring the hardship.

Out of the owed subventions, Osun State government reportedly owed about 15 months while Oyo state owed 8 months.

While noting that it was a tough decision reached after considering the threatened livelihoods of academic staff, Dr Olaniran flayed the call by a group of indigenous association for the expulsion of Osun State indigenes from LAUTECH.

The ASUU boss w‎ho said the call was misplaced and unacceptable added that the solution to the problem at LAUTECH is for the governments of Oyo and Osun states to live up to their social responsibility by properly funding the institution as it should be.

Dr Olaniran wondered why the two-owner states who belonged to the same political party cannot agree on what they want to do with LAUTECH.

A group under the aegis of Ogbomoso Parapo had protested last week on the campus demanding the expulsion Osun state indigenes.

"The present state of affairs in the institution was created by chronic under-funding for which neither Oyo nor Osun state could be exonerated. ASUU is against the call to expel staff of Osun state origin. The university does not operate on statism but tax-payers money."

I Went There: Vancouver

(One in an occasional series.)

One of the reasons I haven't been blogging is that I have been on the road. First there was a lot of domestic travel (covered that in a previous post), and then I was visiting The Northern United States Provinces of Socialized Medicine Canadia and then a couple cities in Central America (more on that in a bit).

Vancouver is a lovely city any time of year, but particularly so in the summer. I had to go out there for work (poor me), and one afternoon I had lunch down at the seawall. The great thing about Van City is that it is pedestrian friendly, the people are mostly nice, and there's a lot of cool neighborhoods to visit. If you like to shop while you do your sightseeing then you will be in heaven. (I'm not a big fan of shopping when I travel because there's nothing in other cities you can't buy in Costa Mesa, but if that's your thing, cool.) If good food and walkable areas and the occasional beer is your thing then you will enjoy Van City quite a lot. It is a very popular vacation destination for a reason.

A downside to Van City is the large drug addicted and able bodied homeless population. I had not seen anyone shooting up or nodded out in the streets in a while but all of that was a part of some minor sightseeing in Gastown. It's pretty sketchy down there in spots! Liberal cities are great until you see so many people completely uninterested in any kind of work. Again: there's no shortage of drug addicted and mentally ill homeless in my neighborhood but Vancouver had hundreds of young, able people sleeping in the streets. It's a fine line between lazy and addicted, and Van City seems to encourage the former while enabling the latter. Overall a fun visit. Recommended.

Go to a Show: Sam Outlaw

Went to a Sam Outlaw show last night. It was great.
He wrote this song for his mom, which is also great.

Full disclosure: Sam and I have been friends for a long time. He has popped up in this space a few times over the years. Funny thing about Sam is that he was always a star, even when he was a 21 year old kid fresh out of college. He wasn't famous, but he was always a star. Some people are like that. Anyway, his music is good if you like melodies with some twang. It probably has more in common with the Eagles than it does with modern prototype 'country' music, but that's a credit in my opinion. And if you aren't here for my opinion then what are you here for?

Sam is touring now. Get out there and see him in person. If you're lucky he will do a live reading of the letter someone wrote his manager because they felt Sam was going to hell because he wrote/performs a song called Jesus Take the Wheel (and Drive Me to a Bar).

Drama as local govt chairman fails to recite national anthem

There was drama at the Ebonyi State House of Assembly on Thursday when a caretaker committee chairman, Henry Eze failed to recite the national anthem and national pledge seven times.

The incident occurred during the screening of Eze and other nominees by members of the house.
Eze had appeared before the House for the screening when he was asked to recite National pledge which he could not do.
He was also asked to recite the National Anthem which he also failed.
The chairmanship nominee for Ishielu Local Government Area was also asked by the Speaker of the Assembly, Ogbonna Nwifuru, to repeat the National pledge and anthem which he failed

The failure prompted Nwifuru to present a copy of the written anthem and pledge to enable him recite it properly.
But, there was a mild-drama when he could not recite the anthem and pledge with the written copy of the Nigerian national anthem and pledge, respectively.
The Speaker, who was visibly annoyed, then asked Eze to go back and study the National Anthem and pledge, describing the failure as an embarrassment.

“How can a council chairman not recite National Anthem and National pledge?
“This house is surprised that as a council chairman, you cannot recite the anthem and pledge when you should be the one to teach your subordinates.
“So, go back and study them,’’ Nwifuru said.

Eze, however, was screened and confirmed by the house despite his inability to recite the National Anthem and pledge.
Meanwhile, the house screened and confirmed 11 chairmanship nominees in the state.
Their screening and confirmation followed the expiration of their tenure in office and their reappointment by Gov. Dave Umahi.

Twelve out of the 13 chairmen were reappointed, while Mr Joseph Orogwu, of Ikwo Local Government was dropped.

World-war looming as North Korea claims successful test of nuclear warhead

North Korean test potentially twice as powerful as last one in January

According to CNN — North Korea said it has hit the button on its fifth and potentially most powerful nuclear test Friday morning, claiming to have successfully detonated a nuclear warhead that could be mounted on ballistic rockets.

State media said the test would enable North Korea to produce "a variety of smaller, lighter and diversified nuclear warheads of higher strike power."

"It's hard for us to verify their claim. My deep fear is that they will launch a live nuclear weapon on one of their missiles, but that would be extremely dangerous as that could trigger a war," said Melissa Hanham, a senior research associate at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies.

World leaders condemned the test , saying it was a clear violation of UN Security Council resolutions, and the Security Council plans to hold an emergency meeting on the issue Friday.

US "does not, and never will, accept North Korea as a nuclear state," Obama says

LAUTECH CRISIS: SAME ISSUE ; DIFFERENT POLITICS , AS THE SUN FROWNS

I  refrained  from  talking  about the ReOpenLautech campaign for  so  long because I realized that comrades who engaged themselves along side took it has a joke.  Really, the struggle is a joke.  And  most  of  the  writers  that  engaged  in  her  affairs  are   "wannabes "  chasing  after  cheap  fame,  spreading  baseless  open  letters  around with junky contents am sorry if the sounds rude .  I’ve  turned  my  face  away  while  events  unfold and no progressive result has come out so far.  But  as  a friend of mine 'Kúnlè Adèbajó writes in one of his award wining articles  said,  “The  deepest  parts  of  hell  are  reserved  for  people  who  keep  quiet  in  times  of  decadence”.  So  if  you  are  reading  this,  note  that  it’s  not  about  fancy  grammar  or  beautiful  writing.  In  fact,  it’s  not  for  the  sake  of  the  text.  Forget  about  me  being  a  writer,  and  think  of  this  as  the  candid  mind  of  a  progressive.

I  won’t  even  try  to  add  flavour  or  conceptualize  this  piece  because  today,  I’m  not  seeking  comments  like  ‘Nice  write-up’.  Today,  I  seek  to  enlighten,  I  seek  to  open  your  minds  to  long  lost  truths.  I  seek  to  open  eyes  to  the  reality  of  our  day.  I  seek  to  start  a  revolution.  And  by  the  end  of  this,  I  want us all to swift into reasonable actions that will ReOpenLautech without any divided interest or faction. I know  everybody  will  take  perspectives.  While  some  will  recline  to  their  seats  and  put  on  their  thinking  caps,  others  will  close  their  eyes  and  charge  head  first  like  Amokachi,  the  bull,  simply  because  bulls  don’t  think.  All  that  is  expected  in  a  community  of  over  thirty  five  thousand  acclaimed  students.  But  before  you  go  crying  to  the  gallery,  calm  yourselves  and  just  read.

Before i proceed ,  let me quickly react to what his Royal Highness , the Ooni of Ife has said concerning Lautech during the courtesy visit of some LAUTECH students to his palace to plead with him as a royal Father in the Yoruba land to wade into the crisis going on in Lautech . He said "He is aware of the crisis on going in the institution that if Lautech will be reopened , then fee hike is inevitable " . at this juncture i think i have to make some little analysis before i finally say my mind in my next article. Let us travel back into history a little bit .

Amid the protest of students Lautech against increment of school fee in the year the authorities of the University and the Owner states governments of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Ogbomosho , Oyo and Osun states also embarked on an aggressive propaganda to water down the backlash of the public against the fee hike from #40,000 to #110,000 . The central premises of the argument of the authorities against the fee hike solidarity was : complaints over the dwindle subventions from the owner state government and the need to develop and sustain quality in the Ladoke Akintola University Of Technology , hence students must pay .. But quite after a long protest of the students there was a change in government simultaneously in the two co-owing states and the skyrocketed fee came down to #65,000 basic tuition and #20,000 acceptance fee which I believe happened on a mutual understanding between the students and the authorities of the university of technology then ,recently , fresher's acceptance fee was increased from #20,000,to #30,000 , with no one questioning the deeds of the management.

Barely five years after the hike , these arguments have been debunked by realities of things we students of the institution can see win our own naked eyes , while the increment too has failed to justify its existence in the first instance.

This nagging crisis of almighty ASUU refusal to submit examination questions which led the managements announcing a false indefinite break has afforded me the time to have a closer or let me say a personal review of the exorbitant and "holy gholistic" increment of our tuition. Looking through the estimation on my tuition receipt , I kept on fixedly gazing on five out of the 12 listed estimation on the list but which are
(1) Development Fee .............. #30,000
(2) Registration Fee ..................#2,000
(3)I.D Card ................................#500
(4) General Maintenance........#25,000
(5)Consumable Fee.................#3,000

Then questions heaped round my thought as ant heap round a cone of sugar begging my attention , then I choose one of the questions which is " development of what ...." An obvious pellucid reason for this question is , so far , the condition Lautech has been during the time when fee was #40,000 and now . Well , consoling myself , it was at least or probably used to pay the salaries of the workers before the academic unions(almighty ASUU , NASU , SSANU , NAAT) unleash their wrath of strike against the management since the owner states governments no more consider funding of education a fundamental responsibility. And today this is another great testimony of corruption in our educational system where money meant for development of facilities in the institution to produce world class graduates has been diverted to payment of salaries which should be a fundamental responsibility of the government. The Vice-Chancellor wants to remain is office just like Dasuki and diverted our money ... Where is EFCC?

Someone is asking what about the new halls and convocation hall that was just erected on campus , my friend ,that project was funded by the almighty ASUU strike in 2013 , then what about the painting of halls and some renovations we can see ... Thanks for helping me fix something at least to point at for the General Maintenance fee of #25,000 from each student 100-500level ... Where is EFCC?

It may interest you to you to know that , all the estimations on our tuition fee receipt was a result of the unified protest of students which saw to the reduction we have now. As far as am concerned, no development whatsoever has been done by the management ... Where is EFCC?

We pay #500 for I.D card every session 100-500 level and he the we would only be giving identity card during our 100level days if not 200level...Where is EFCC?

We pay #3,000 for consumable as if we eat everyday in school ....Where is EFCC?

Coupled with some other registration charges I still do not understand the reason why we pay faculty and departmental fee , #2,000 registration fee is meant for what? Where is EFCC?

I leave the total estimation of all the administrative titled fee we pay to the mathematicians to rack brains about considering we sum up to 35.000 students.

Maybe my definition of development is what I'm inferior ring from? Lest I fall a victim of erroneous conclusion.

Let me linguistically analyze the word "Development" , or probably what management mean . Is what my dictionary defined it to be or what? Well , here is what I have according to lexicographers.

Development is : the act or process of growing or causing something to grow or become larger or more advanced.

Sequel to the above definition , is it then justifiably right , based on the condition of our lecture halls , sport facilities and Others , that the management have satisfied the above definition ? To which #30,000 development fee was attached to? I see the word development used by the management as a canopy to hide somewhat exorbitant fee. If not , why the sudden increment in freshers acceptance fee? Where is EFCC?

Obviously , this situation needs attention and changes.  Some lecture halls need chair , some more pillars need erecting and flooring needs some tiling.

These  which  I  have  written  here  are  mere  snippets.  I  can  keep  writing  but  then  I  may  bore  you.    And  moreover,  I  want  to  believe  that  every  student  –  even  those  in  their  first  year  -  has  been  visited  with  the  melodrama  of  the  management and the government.  The  university is  endowed  with  enough  problems and corruption to  fill  a  book  that  will  top  numerous  bestseller  lists.

But  I  have  not  written  just  to  lament  the  problem.  Remember  I  said,  this  is  the  start  of  a  revolution.  I want to acknowledge  that  this  piece  is  not late yet because  in  a  world  where  the  truth  is  a  hunted  specie,  where  a  select  few  sit  in  the  dark  to  determine  the  fate  of  the  majority;  fear  is  bound  to  thrive.  The  fear  of  what  may  or  may  not  be  has  thrived  in  my  heart  for  long  because  people  who  have  stood  for  the  truth  at  different  times  have  been  persecuted  rather  unjustly.  The unjust persecution  of  the students froms University of Lagos  bears  me  witness.

Before  I  retire  back  into  my  quiescence,  I  seek  that  you  reading  join  in  the  revolution.  Do  help  truth  prevail,  please. Employ  logic  without  a  touch  of  scepticism  and join this struggle.  Now,  this  is  the  least  you  can  do  for  the  Lautech  student  community.  Tomorrow,  there’ll  be  a  chance  to  refine  the  system,  let’s  just  do  what  is  right  today.  Remember,  Three months at home does not concern your hostel agent and landlords.

As we jointly advocate for Lautech to be reopened , we should not forget that the owner state government plan  to increase our school fees which in turn will be used to pay the salary of staffs of the institution, as the IGR can no longer sustain the school running and no single development will occur in the school as usual as the Ooni of Ife as echoed in his voice. Even Alafin of Oyo ask we student to cooperate with the corruption. Smh.

Lets join the fight to reopen lautech for good of our future leaders.

NIGERIA 1-0 TANZANIA: KELECHI IHEANACHO HANDS ROHR FIRST WIN

The Manchester City forward's brilliant strike handed coach Gernot Rohr a winning start in charge of the Super Eagles against the Taifa Stars.

Gernot Rohr claimed his first win as Nigeria coach as his men saw off Tanzania 1-0 in Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

Kelechi Iheanacho's lone strike was all the hosts needed to see off the strong-willed Taifa Stars who came to Uyo with the ambition of shocking the Super Eagles.

The visitors posted some threats inside the hosts' half in the opening five minutes, but Rohr’s team reclaimed possession and dictated the pace of the game.

Despite the dominance, Nigeria failed to convert clear cut chances with Victor Moses the major culprit as he spurned glorious chances while Odion Ighalo looking very tired against Charles Mkwasa’s side.

Aside from the comedy of misses, Aishi Manula was at his best to keep the game scoreless with breathtaking saves.

However, the pressure paid off in the 77th minute as Iheanacho gave his side the lead with an audacious strike. He finds space outside the Taifa Stars’ defence before unleashing an unstoppable missile past goalkeeper Manula.

Nigeria pushed harder for more goals but the Taifa Star’s held their nerves to keep the score line decent. Even with the win, the Super Eagles will not be featuring in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.

BARCELONA SIGN RONALDINHO... AGAIN!

It has come to light that the Brazilian, who earned hero status at Camp Nou after helping the Blaugrana return to their former glory, will work with the club once more..

Ronaldinho is back at Barcelona! But don't get too excited, fans, as it is in a non-playing role...

The Brazilian, 36, is teaming up with the club he helped return to its former glory between 2003 and 2008 in an ambassadorial role.

Barcelona are opening a new office in New York, USA, to enhance their growth internationally on 6 September, which has brought about them re-signing Ronaldinho.

The Catalan giants will certainly prove to be a hit in the States if Ronaldinho is good an ambassador as he was with his feet back in his heydey at Camp Nou...

KANU SCORES HAT-TRICK AS ARSENAL LEGENDS BEAT MILAN GLORIE IN EMIRATES

The Nigerian striker was in impressive form as Arsenal comprehensively beat a Milan side which featured the likes of Christian Vieiri and Cafu.

A Nwankwo Kanu hat-trick and goal from Robert Pires gave Arsenal Legends a 4-1 win over Milan Glorie in a charity match at Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners attempted to start the match with 12 men when Nigerian striker Kanu didn’t realise he had been named as a substitute, but the 40-year-old made up for his mistake when he scored a header from Emmanuel Petit’s cross on 27 minutes, before Milan’s Christian Vieri equalised with a scrappy effort five minutes before the break.

Kanu scored a second on 72 minutes before Pires got in on the act just a day after playing at the Wembley Cup, while Vieri netted a late consolation for Milan when he rebounded in a penalty which was well saved by David Seaman.
Highlights included Martin Keown begging Arsene Wenger to bring him on throughout the match and Nigel Winterburn squaring up to Paolo Di Canio in a mock incident of when the Italian confronted a referee against Sheffield Wednesday in September 1998.
Robert Pires, Freddie Ljungberg and Kolo Toure all featured for the home side while Wenger and Fabio Capello took charge of the respective squads in a match which is expected to raise £1 million for the Arsenal Foundation’s mission to build pitches for children in London, Jordan and Somalia.

SOME WAYS TO SURVIVE NIGERIA WORST ECONOMIC RECESSION

Friends I found this and thought we may benefit from "some" of these if not all... Here are some things to cut down on in order to make it out of this recession financially sane.

*Generator usage*
It’s bad enough the economy is crumbling faster than a cookie but how many Nigerians can recall a lengthy spell of uninterrupted power supply.
Our standby household generators have for years, been doing what the government cannot do for us.
Now that the situation is getting dire, generator usage should be restricted to specific hours and to take care of necessities.
Comfort can wait till recession is over and we are out of troubled waters.

*Eating out*
Anyone who actually cooks will know that restaurants serve overpriced, often unsatisfying food.
So instead of taking your hard earned money to pay for ‘fancy’ food, go to the market, buy raw food and head to the kitchen.
You’ll save so much money.

*Driving walkable distances*
The cost of fuel is higher than it has ever been in Nigeria’s history, so why not kill two birds with one stone while going for short errands.
Take a walk or go for a run while running your errand. Your body and pockets will thank you.

*Bulk buying of groceries*
Constant grocery shopping can be such a chore so we tend to buy in bulk.
However, a disadvantage of bulk buying is that some goods may expire or spoil before you get around to using them, hence cut your grocery shopping list down to necessities.
Get what you need and not what you think you will need.

*New clothes and shoes*
Your old clothes are perfectly fine!
Oh you think people have noticed you’ve had that shirt for a while? Frankly, it’s nobody’s business.
As long as your clothes are not obviously tattered, there is no use going cloth shopping every week to impress people and depress your bank account.

*Hanging out*
We all love spending quality time with friends and family but instead of going someplace where you’ll spend more than you budgeted for (more often than not), invite them to your house and plan activities everyone can participate in.
You’ll create a stronger bond and more lasting activities while saving money.

*Vacations abroad*
Also known as “the king of excesses”, vacationing abroad is officially a luxury at this point in time.
Why go and spend your hard earned ‘naira’ in a foreign country contributing to the growth of their economy while leaving yours in the backseat.
Stay at home!

*DSTV subscription*
You don’t need to pay for all the channels. It’s not a competition.
You hardly ever watch more than 15 of the channels on the premium package, so why the bother?
The smallest bouquet has news channels for the grown-ups and cartoons for the kids.

*Water as opposed to juice and sodas*
Some people think there is an award for living lavish. News flash: there isn’t.
Most of these processed drinks you desire to gulp down your throat with every meal are not even good for your health and they definitely cost more than water. Drink water, you’ll live longer.

*Unnecessary phone calls*
Restrict your airtime to calls with purpose (work, business).
There’s no need to ask your friend what he/she is eating or staying on a call for an hour discussing what nail polish color to wear to an event.
